The Freehand Zero (or FHZ) by Duncan is an all plastic yo-yo released in July 2004 with friction sticker response. They were first available in Hong Kong and are now widely available. Originally the FHZ was only available in six opaque colors, but now a large number of editions have been released in a wide range of colors.

The FHZ is also versatile due to the fact that it can be modded (fairly easily) to accept recessed silicone or recessed friction stickers. In fact one popular modder, Luke Vader, specializes in modding FHZs with a special finish and/or a recessed silicone modification.

Despite its low price, Tyler Severence used a FHZ in 2007 to win the 5A world title.

[edit] Set-up

The first few runs of freehand zeros came with the o-ring spacer/shim spacer set-ups. However, after Worlds 2005, the newer freehand zeros all come with a set of either thick bronze spacers (full gap) or thin silver spacers (same gap as with the o-ring spacer set-up). This new set-up eliminates the hassle of an ever-changing gap width. Despite this change, some people still prefer the older o-ring spacer set-up.
